I am about 40% through the book, and my wife who finished it a few days back sez she doesn't want to see the movie after reading it.I am not forcing her to say why... don't like spoilers... but did anyone else have that impression?

Follow Ups:
and a overwhelming dose of depression.

Well, the book is getting more depressing by the hour. It is a rather disturbing analysis of human souls, and no good ending is looming. Quite a torn character that colonel is, and the babe is on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

VK,Didn't read the book, but I thought the movie showcased some of the best acting on film in some time...story and plot may not be for everybody, but Sir Ben and the lovely Jen were great imo.
regards,
I didn't read the book but did enjoy the film. It is relentlessly down beat, however, with absolutely no comic relief.

While reading the book, I am naturally trying to imagine how one would make it into a movie... and I see hard road for the screenwriter and director... the way it is written is all internal emotions of the two characters, not the events, but the inner worlds.I suspect I will have to twist my wife's arm a bit and rent it. We both love Ben, so that should be possible. But it wasn't till the very end of the book that she developed that opinion.
The book is quite good, BTW, so I do recommend it, either with or without the film.
