I've been putting off buying "Return of the King" b/c as soon as I buy it, I know I will be parked in front of the TV for the 1,2,3 marathon.But I know some of you have done this deed. Any helpful hints, comments, preferred popcorn brands?

I recommend Orvell Redinbacher popcorn, buttered & salted to taste.Undoubtably watching them together will be a lot of fun, but try to schedule reasonable breaks between features (i.e., an hour or so). It shouldn't impact the flow of the story, but it might just save a little wear and tear on your butt-cheeks.

Jackson will eventually return to milk the LOTR cash cow after a few flops.
BTW, Peter Jackson is apparently attempting to do the Kong remake correctly, setting it in the early 1930's, the same period as in the original RKO movie. It's bound to be a tough shoot though. Doing a period film entails meticulous attention to detail; getting the settings and colloquel dialogue right are crucial to suspension of disbelief. We'll see if he pulls it off with the kind of gusto and vision he brought to LoTR. Jackson may surprise his relentless critics; he's a much more gifted and accomplished Director than some folks are willing to give him credit.AuPh
It would've been nice, and Peter Jackson has been criticised by fans of the original works about the intentional omission (sticklers for word & deed accuracy) in the regular theatrical release. I wouldn't count on it, but perhaps some element of the Scouring may be included in the Expanded Edition, even if it's digitally inserted as an afterthought.AuPh

The extended versions of LoTR & TTT had over 20 and 30 minutes of additional footage respectively; in each instance this footage has added significant story content to these films. Fans would've been very happy to have seen the extended versions intact in theaters, but the added length to a series of already epic films might have proven a bit much for weak blattered folks, not to mention the disgruntled theater owners who gripe about long movies reducing the number of showings per screen per day.For those of us who love these films, the extended versions are the only way to go!

OTOH, I'm not the only person around here who feels that you're grossly in error about LoTR (i.e., calling the entire epic a "monstrosity" simply because YOU fail to appreciate it)! You're certainly entitled to dislike these wonderful films, but not to trash the series simply because it isn't YOUR taste in cinema, nor to criticize those who DO appreciate it.AuPh

I really can't understand your problem. We have people routinely slam films here. Some of those films are liked by others. Yet I don't recall anyone besides YOU to go ballistic over such "rejection".

This poster has claled him on this correctly - nothing argumentative about it - but it was from Patrick.
And while I'm no fan of the Lotr pictures myself largely because i also found it overlong - I am not going to SLAM a person's taste in these pictures.
I guess they didn't teach you that if you don't have something nice to say don't say anything.
This particular thread was obviously geared to LOTR lovers and how they would like to watch all three pictures - there is nothing asking for an opinion about them.
It's pretty small of people who's only goal on here is to rain on other's people's most cherrished. Says a lot about your personality and Patrick's.

I think a marathon might be dangerous to your mental health. Slipping in a short porn between features might keep you grounded in reality. But, to lose an entire day to middle-girth is too much.

I obviously never done that, but I was the one serving the said popcorn to the individual attempting such a marathon - albeit only the first two parts.Not a pretty sight!

Have you never conducted your own marathon during really bad weather or when sick?

1. First 4 seasons of the Sopranos (only broke for pizza and cleaned guns throughout)
2. Wings, Paths of Glory, Stalingrad, a Bridge Too Far, the Longest Day, and Tora Tora Tora in one day.
3. Ten Commandments, Exodus, Lawrence of Arabia, Operation Thunderbolt, Black Sunday during a very snowy Passover.
