I think Ebert is dead on in his review of this movie. One of Zhang Yimou's best, I think. One of the most visually stunning movies I've seen in a long time. Every bit as good as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. In addition, if you like Rashamon, you will enjoy the parallels here as well.
Victor, since you like Ju Dou, I think you would like this one as well.

Follow Ups:
this movie is certainly visually stunning, and I enjoyed it. But, I thought The Emperor and the Assassin by Chen Kaige was a much better movie of the same story.

But was surprised - quite pleasantly - to find it different in tone and treatment. At first I was getting bored because it didn't have the swashbuckling swordplay and flying darts. But later on, as the movie progressed, it was apparent the intent was not to do another "Crouching" but a story on its own, and focus, which is nationalism.
The story-telling was complex yet simple.
I think the movie achieved its goal that by not killing the emperor when he (Nameless) had a chance to do so, he evolved into "somebody" from a nameless assassin. That his love for country - when men come and go, a country lives - is the essence of existence.
Beautiful cinematography and a clever plot, though I was slighty disappointed, now doubt due to my unrealistically high expectations in light of Crouching Tiger . . .A minor shortcoming were the fight scenes--not nearly as intense and precise as those in Tiger . . . Nevertheless, well worth seeing.
You may wish to try Iron Monkey. Similar in style to Crouching Tiger, but had better fight scenes.

but do try to avoid the English-dubbed version, which made the movie too comic IMO. Try to get the English subtitled version if you can.

when possible. I've got so many imported movies, that I hardly notice subs.
Iron Monkey was much better than Croutching Tiger
