Curiously, my first veiwing of this Blii Murray vehicle left me under whelmed but it has grown on me over the years and is now a favorite with laugh out loud lines and situations. I can't imagine anyone other than Murray in the lead although I could imagine another female lead instead of McDowell. The film was not actually shot in Pawatawnny but in a town in Illinois with a central square which the fim makers felt provided a more cohesive gathering place for the populace.

Follow Ups:
I was watching "Groundhog Day" again on cable, when I noticed the film uses Rachmaninoff's 18th Variation 3 separate times...once as background mood music for a scene transition, once as Bill Murray attempts it for his piano lesson (and that really is Murray playing it really badly!) and once when Bill is playing the piano at the town shindig. When I pointed this out to my wife during a showing later that afternoon, she was shocked that she had never recognized her favorite piece of music tucked away in one of her favorite films.
Another reason to enjoy "Groundhog Day"!

Bill Murray's character marries McDowell. He evolves from reporter to actor, and 15 years later finds himself in the typical Quagmire that is marriage. McDowell keeps nagging him about house remodeling, and he flies off to Japan to shoot some commercials, where he meets you-know-who :)

rico,I had a similar experience with "Groundhog Day"- it has many interesting subtlties in the way Murray's ascerbic, cynical character gradually evolves- and also that he doesn't realize why he is i.e. the prisoner of that one day- until he gets it right!
Would that we could have a situation when we could "practice" life properly awhile before being thrown into it!
I'm glad you mentioned McDowell, who could've sunk the whole ship in ths case. My reluctance at first with "GD" is that I think Andie McDowell just has no screen presence at all. Though she also has a bit of an evolution too that parallels Murray, gaining trust and becomong more open, she doesn't reveal enough and I ended up wondering why Murray pursues her other than gradual familiarity. As he gets to know everyone in the town, he had alternate choices.
Armchair casting: How about Jennifer Jason Leigh- someone with a little spark? And where has Minnie Driver been? She could've used her "Gross Pointe Blank" style..
But "GD" is a lot of fun that borders on moving, carefully made, and worth a repeat viewing for those who thought it empty "high concept" fluff.
Cheers,
Yes, and unlike the groundhog, it isn't until Murry sees his own shadow that he can get on with his life.

Groundhog day is one of my favorites...It's quite ironic that it grew on you after repeated viewings!

and "50 First Dates" are 2 guilty pleasures I like. Some shared elements in both.
