Lucas sends fans to the dark sideBy J.P. McCormick, Boston Globe Correspondent | September 21, 2004
I'm thinking of going to California to find George Lucas, fill his beard with barbecue sauce, and feed him to a Wampa. What could bring about such malice? The fact that only the "special edition" versions of the "Star Wars" trilogy are being released today on DVD. There was a time when I could almost quote all the films start to finish. I dressed up like Darth Vader for Halloween. I thought that if I really tried I could master the Jedi mind trick and get out of homework. I stopped this madness when I decided that I would one day like to kiss a girl (without asking her to put her hair in Princess Leia cinnamon buns).
I was 8 years old in 1977 when my parents took my brother, my sister, and me to see "Star Wars." My sister Kerry liked it, but my brother Mick and I were blown away. My father enjoyed it, but I think he liked seeing how excited we were more than the movie. My mother fell asleep after the credits started, a habit she would continue every time we dragged her to a science fiction or fantasy movie.

I will drag out the old VHS tapes of the original version, thank ya very much. Why does Lucas insist on screwing around with it? I know it's his vision, but some of us were satisfied with it the first time around. At least give us that option.I might check out the new ones the next time I get a free rental coupon, but other than that, I'm not interested.

it's not like GL installed the designated hitter, or anything.
This is a film forum.2nd--I'm not some SW fanatic who dresses up like a stormtrooper. I just prefer the original version over the subsequent re-edits. What's wrong with that? Is it really too much to ask?

so come clean, ok?Me? I remember when I was 15 and my buddy and I took a freakin' 2 hour bus drive down to Grohman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood from the SF Valley and saw it there soon after it opened. We weren't old enough to drive and our mom's weren't drivng all the way down there, but we did end up staying for two or three showings.
Personally, I didn't even see the three reissues when they came to my theatre way back when, so I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other. But when GL states that these are the films that he WANTED to make, then that's fine by me.
I don't get my panties all in a bundle like some of you.
I have the VHS boxed set of the original versions, and that's it. Can't remember the last time I watched it. What a fanatic "fanboy" I must be.

Ever seen that clip of Triumph the Comic Dog interviewing those die-hard Star Wars fans in NYC? That is hilarious........
And you watch these on pan and scan TAPES?!

Should have made that clear ;)

The DVD version contains numerous FURTHER changes and enhancements from the re-releases of the late ninties. As for his complaint about Jabba, further CGI has been done to make him more realistic and consistent in the films. This article looks like an excuse to complain about something nmot that important as he has no problem with some changes and does with others.

I'm not. George had it right the first time.I think you missed the writer's point. You may disagree with the article - you may even prefer the current DVD versions of the SW Trilogy. But I agree with the writer that some of the story "enhancements" added later detract from the original films.
I gave up on Lucas' storytelling skills years ago. But I'd still kinda like to have the original versions available on a nice DVD.

Posters 'n all. Really brought back memories for me, more than the 'improved versions' ever will.Whilst Lucas may feel he can now perfect the film (like bad art> mainly by adding pointless visual distraction and fussy detail, as well as paring away opportunities for our imaginations to take root by showing/explaining too much [see extra Mos Eisly shots for early example]), it wasn't the director's cut which made such a massive impact on me and the world.
I want DVDs of the original, "warts 'n all"; I want the cheesy but visceral effects; I want the clunky Tatooine speeders that actually looked like they were part of the landscape; in short, I want the original films which were *OF THEIR TIME* to help me feel like I felt in '77, not a low-cal, healthy/improved chargrilled re-hash. Without the add-ons, I felt I shared this STAR WARS universe with Lucas. Now, I feel left out as it becomes increasingly his own with every effect he pastes on top. There is too much sugar in this DVD cake.
