Am I missing something with this one? I tried very hard to get into this flick the other night, but after 40 minutes I gave up. I honestly couldn't tell if there was a lot of subtle goings on that I could not figure out (maybe to be revealed later in the flick?) or nothing at all was going on and I was going be bored until the film ended. Plus I was really struggling to accept Kilmer in this role. I just couldn't get away from images of Val as "Iceman" in Top Gun or "Jim Morrison" in The Doors.Anyway, Spartan is a rental DVD and I still have a few days left. Can someone who enjoyed this one convince me to watch some more of it, or should I return it early and get on to something else?
TIA.

there's a particular oddness to the way david mamet has his characters talk - in an off way that suggests they're strategizing something or hiding information. it's like the train scene between janet leigh and frank sinatra in the manchurian candidate. i think a viewer either finds it really intruiging or just goes "huh?"when val kilmer goes into the interrogation room and pretends to be a secert service guy to force a lie out of the guy being interrogated, i was hooked on the film. mamet moves this scene so quickly that you may have missed the gamemanship between all the characters. i like that gamesmanship in mamet's films. have you liked other david mamet films?

it was a decent film that was somewhat predictable. I didn't mind the sullen VK in this one and I guess there was an interesting twist in it. I thought that the premise for her staying 'gone' was a bit far fetched, but who knows? The ending kind of left me ambivalent in that the bad guys kind of get away with it.
I thought VK was much better in The Salton Sea.
Try it again. Just after you stopped is about where it takes a twist in another direction.

Trying to figure out which president is the fun.
I saw it in the theater and enjoyed it very much. There is some story developing, particularly when he locates the girl. And some of the action scenes are very well done.
