Released around the same time as the similarly themed "Armagedon", "Deep Impact" is a far superior effort, more believable and less over the top. Tea Leone stars as a an ambitious MSNBC investigative reporter who accidently stumbles on a secret government project to build a giant spacecraft with Russia to alter the course of a comet on a collision course with the earth. Morgan Freeman as president takes her under his wing and also appoints aging astronaut Robert Duvall to pilot the spacecraft in the comet's orbit. A number of subplots don't hinder the overall thrusat of the story. The special effects are convincing and hope rises at the end.
Follow Ups:
I hated "Armagedon" with a passion. "Deep Impact" is a lot better. It's no classic but it is well-done and entertaining in a scary sort of way.Who's the girl (she played Elija Woods girlfriend) who looks like a younger version of Helen Hunt? They aren't sisters are they?

She does look like Helen Hunt, but, no, they're not sisters. She and Elijah Wood were a a good combo as DI's young lovers.Leelee first impressed on TV. Shw was in Eyes Wide Shut amongst other theatrisal and TV movies.
I've never beem able to fet through Armageddon.
She was in Eyes Wide Shut, amongst other TV and theatrical movies. No relation to Helen Hunt AFAIK, but a fine young actress. She and Elijah Wood made a most sympathetic couple.

Her best film work was probably "A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries", although check out her smaller role in "Max."

You're right. She was excellent in A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries.
Impact is how it would really be--no comic book action just high drama.
