I've pretty much narrowed my choice down to Panasonic or Pioneer. Both comparably priced and featured. Just want to get the one with the better quality.Any opinions or experienced insights are appreciated

I love what it can do for me compared to a VCR. Chase play, etc. No hard drive on mine but then discs are cheap and I just re-record over mine (supposedly you can about 1000 times). I'm still on my first disc, the others are sitting on a shelf. I don't keep anything after watching.
I find the tuner section is not that great (I use mine as my tuner for the PJ), not as good as my Sony VCR was for sure (now in the bedroom). The Panasonic DVD PLAYER I had in there before had a slightly better picture than the Pioneer with discs (it was just a player), so did my old Sony DVP-3000. After some fine tuning it's barely noticeable.

I bought Pioneer with 160 Gb HDD,and in one word it is fantastic gadget.Editing capabilites are simple and enormous. It has fast burn from HDD to DVD.Simply go for it.Very intuitive menus.

Like you I'm favoring those two brands but when it comes to video I'm more of a Panasonic fan. I'm guessing that you're interested in the ones with a HD drive. I've not bought yet either and may wait for the next generation. What do you know about the editing capabilities? Recordable DVD's can be pricey and I don't want to end up with a bunch of coasters.
