Saw a trailer for this on the tube yesterday. Looks like Dennis Quaid will be one of the characters.I saw the original FotP when I was a teen and thought is was a great film. I guess the talent vacuum in Hollywood has had to resort to filming remakes of successful films to offset the $150M turkeys they are turning out.

Follow Ups:
The original was on last night on Starz/Encore action channel. (Will play again next week, see link)Very powerful movie about how a group of men had to work together to survive in the Sahara desert. Of course, back in 1965, we had different fish to fry other than al Qaeda; so the new version will have to be more PC.

MMastal,I've seen a trailer for this one too. The old Jimmy Stewart was a favourite on mine when a kid and today, even knowing the whole story doesn't diminish my enjoyment.
The story must be very, very similar to the original but the makers have fallen fot the old trap of enhancing small episodes of the original and expending detail. I can see in the trailer there is a much bigger deal made of the Arabs that arrive near the stranded aviators' camp. in the old one, there were nomads on camels, rcihard Attenbourogh and the Doctor go over the dune to see if they will ehlp the survivors and the two of them are killed. It was actually not too central in the story.
One thing I noticed in the trailer. Probably in order to make a difference from the old one, the required twin boom plane is broken on the opossite side. In the new version, when they build thw new plane out of the old, they will be dragging the port side wing over to starboard rather than vice versa as in the original- an important, important change from the original. Who says Hollywod writers can't come up with something new?
I can see already from the trailer how annoyed I'd be with tthe remake of a movie that was so well done it didn't need a reamke.
I'll wait for this one until it appears on HBO six months from now.
Cheers,
Between " The Lost patrol " and " The Flight of the Phoenix " !
