In this Val Lewton thriller Simone Simon plays a woman who becomes a large killer cat by night. Like the first part of "Jaws' the terror is built by NOT showing the frightening things but having the audience feel their presence. Considering how little IS shown this is a rermarkably scary movie, far more so than the inferior eighties remake. Beautifully shot in noirish high contrast black and white. The black leopard is a beautiful anaimal.

Follow Ups:
as a kid it scared the crap out of me. Much more scary then the blood slasher holoween or s. king stuff of recent years.

Great film, 1942 btw.
The sequels weren't quite as good.
But I also enjoy the Schraeder remake (more so now than when it first came out in 1982).Years ago there was a fabulous laserdisc boxset of all the Val Lewton thrillers. Wish I had a bought one then.

I disagree strongly that the sequel was not as good as the original. Actually, I think "Curse of the Cat People" to be far superior to the original. What threw most people was that "Curse..." had little to do with the original. Instead we have a small, sensitive mood piece about a lonely little girl. Is it her father's perception of his new marriage or is it a supernatural event? This is the genius of the Lewton/Tourneau films. Horror is psychological in basis.
Give "Curse..." another look. I think you'll see that it goes beyond horror into the realm of the artfilm.

Not as stylish as Cat People but one of the better Hammer movies of the sixties.
