Even if somewhat uneven, this is a great film that already shows the signature of a great master. It is simply a must, given the masterful directing (incredibly well done detective story for 1949), wonderful acting by young Mifune, and, most of all, Takashi Shimura, who plays his older partner and who gives simply unforgettable performance.![]()

Follow Ups:
never saw Stray Dog, but wasn't there a Straw Dogs? Peckinpaw (spelling?) film. Dustin Hoffman and an English actress with a nice rack. That was a disturbing movie, back then. Haven't seen that movie in years. Wonder if it would hold up today? Another one to put on my Netflix Queue list....

is the owner of that rack. This is a very violent film but without the mitigating stylization of Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange", which was released at about the same time.

yes indeed. Susan George. Beautiful in a tight knit sweater. Out of one, as well. Violent and quite disturbing. Don't remember much but those adjectives come to mind. More than 30 years later: gee I may not want to be disturbed again. I might just pass on this baby. Timing will be everything with this viewing....will see what the deal is when it comes...

Vic,Bought this one the day Criterion released it and I watch it all the time. Mifune just got better and better.
I still like the Bad Sleep Well as Kurosawa's most underrated film.

Like Bergman his early work is more than worth to look at, in fact very rewarding!
Joyeux Noel, Tosh!
