This Cannes "sweetheart" put quite a different light on my Isabelle who played a very domineering muscial instructor by day and a totally sexually repressed and twisted sister by night. Prone to visiting porn shops, spending binges, and a little self-multilation she is happened upon by a young pianist/engineer who is smitten by her. His pursuit of her leads to some very provocative sexual encounters and ultimately to her bitter rejection and heartbreak. It was a big risk for Isabelle to do this role, but it worked: Grand Prize and Best Actor/Actress.
Follow Ups:
One test for a film greatness is the test of time. I know I saw that film, but for the life of me I will not recall much at all.Completely, fully forgotten.

and an uncomfortable one at that. I don't necessarily think it's "memorable" in the classic sense and it would never be due to its dark, sexual content.
speaking of performance vehicles and sexual content: How does Last Tango in Paris hold up? Saw it when it first came out years ago. Just remember the butter and tush. Was there more to the film? Brando paybday? Can't remember a thing, but the tush and butter. Worth a viewing, now, without all the hoopla?

Well it has been discussed already here, but in the mean time the author has got a prize...

Some good stuff. Risky role, as you say, for Isabelle. She deliver as always, but nothing much going on. great acting--no story...
