The beautiful cinematography, the quiet power of the male lead and the tactile sensuality of the beautiful wife...and the transcendent, masterful performance of Michel Simon as the first-mate.
Has any better depiction of marriage ever been filmed? Has a bygone age ever been so perfectly captured?
The restored DVD-version is wonderful.
IMO, one of the most perfect works of art ever produced, in any medium. What a tragedy Vigo died so young...
(And, audio buffs, you can see an early system and the--even then--- trials of tweaking!)

Not perfect but quite good. Have you seen his other one - Zero for Conduct? That one left me mostly untouched.

Is there something like perfection? At best: perfect as perfect can be. Or almost to perfection.
Vigo reach new highs back then, and he has been copied very often.

    ...consider L'Atalante the best movie ever made.
    While I don't think there is single best in anything, it is an incredible work.
