Gregory Peck himself said that this was his favorite role and I believe that the Atticus Finch character was voted # 1 fan favorite in a recent poll. I can never get through it without tearing up. Everything about it is SO well done. There is an anachronism at the beginning which I believe is in the book. It's supposed to be 1932 and FDR hadn't yet uttered his famous line about nothing to fear but fear itself.
The public TV series "I'll Fly Away" was based in part on the Finch's relationsship with their servant Calpurnia.
I just orderd the DVd and hope it will be an improvement over the LD.

Follow Ups:
there was more than one LD issue. One was horrible, two were OK.The DVD is nominally clearer, as always, but the slow pans coupled with extreme level of contrast and detail yield some scenes that are rife with artifacts. I have become aclimated to such things and most DVDs no longer give me headaches, but this one still can. That is true on any number of players for my copy.
I hope yours is better. I would upgrade players, but with HD-DVD right 'round the corner I am holding back. And there are only a few disks I find bothersome. Unfortunately, this excellent film is one of them. At least I have 2 different laserdiscs to fall back on.
Thanks, this is helpful. The LD is the "Sugnature Commemorative Edition" so it is probably the best one. I doin't know if the DVD is ananmorphic, do you? I will report back when it arrives.

I got an email from a friend about the overturning of the murder conviction of that insane woman and the phoney Park Dietz expert testimony. My friend's email ended with:
Remember well-Tom Robinson's spirit lingers in the courtroom and
Reverend Sykes whispers "stand up, Miss Jean Louise. Your father's
passing."
