Al Pacino at his 2nd best (His best:Glengary Glen Ross).Lotsa great minor roles in this film: John voight/Wes Studi/Henry Rollins...& that actor from "Birdcage", can't think of his name. Oh yeah!! Almost forgot Tone Loc as a nightclub "player".
Best cops/robbers gun battle ever put on film.
Wonder what ever became of Wes Studi. He was great in Manns other film: Last Of The Mohicans.
Follow Ups:
Great movie...great acting by all...bullshit ending though, throughout the movie DeNiro was way ahead of Al, way too smart to end up cornered by Al. I think the ending would have been better and more believable if DeNiro has just given him the slip and dissappeared. Obviously the 'Good guy always win' mentality dictated the ending.

The cup of coffee between Pacino and DeNiro was a great moment in modern cinema. Never has a film so comprehensively covered so many facets of a crime gang's lives. DeNiro's "honorable thief" had me wanting to be on his crew.

for getting so many great performances out of so many actors. His virtuosity obviously not only extends from his camera work and vision but to performing talents as wekll:
Daniel Day Lewis, Madeline Stowe, Wes Studi and all the others mentioned. How many directors can you really say that about? And Mann is really an "action" director. That's pretty damned amazing when you think about it.

Those guys were not in Kate Mantelinni's a the same time, IMO.

I warched "Heat" last night. The coffee scene consists of over the shoulder shots juxtaposed and you NEVER see the two of them in a "two shot" together. That itself is out of sync with the rest of the film.

If anything, I would think there would be concern for Pacino going ever further over the top when faced with "competition".
