Robert Duvall was awarded an acting Oscar for his portrayal of a down and out, alcoholic, and over the hill country singer who is helped by his involvement with and eventual marriage to a young widow whose husband was killed in Viet Nam. She has a young son whom they raise together. Duvall is also estranged from his teen age daughter. Hoerton Foote wrote the very low key and deliberately paced screenplay, which takes place in flat rural Texas. Duvall is terrific in this role. Strangely, I had bener seen this until last evening. I enjoyed it very much.
