I have been following this series from day 1, and it has its moments, I do think the verbage is over baked, just too much words used to convey simple messages. Lots of shady characters, which heightens the danger of frontier life. Interesting to see whether the second season will find its footing, I thought the first season was thrashing around trying to find its direction, like many first seasons often do...I love westerns so I will continue watching.

I would never in a million years beleive that a thug like Al Swearingen could have such a clever, often hilarious repartee, but damn! Its good! Dority saying, "..just say the word Al, and I'll turn them timbers into kindling.." last week, a complete throw away line that cracked me up. In fact the whole dialogue about the coming of wireless was great. Its moments like those that flesh out the show and make it a worthwhile watch from begionning to end week after week. . Sure the basic story lines are very compelling, but if you're not listening you'll miss dozens of lines that to me put this show out of the realm of the very good and into the upper echelon occupied by only a very few shows.

Should one who never saw the first season buy it in the DVD set released?Or should we wait and reevaluate the matter after the second season?
I don't subscribe to cable, but am willing to buy HBO's better offerings as DVD sets (e.g., Band of Brothers). Thanks.

The first season was fantastic and holds up on its own. Two shows into this year, I am not so sure.
