Previous poster mentioned Wings of Honneimaise, same director also did one called Mahoromatic, which has turned into my favorite anime ever. Warped, perverted, funny, thought-provoking. Has it all.

Check out Wings of Honneamise for the same flavor (turn of the last century era spaceflight) The same director did Akira in the late eighties (his previous movie), which is considered one of the best animated films ever made.Also check out the films of Hayao Miyazaki, the Steven Speilberg of Anime (except ALL his movies are good :) Try Laputa: Castle In The Sky, Spirited Away, and his new Howl's Moving Castle for more Jules Verne inspired stuff.
