Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall star in this sweeping story of free range cattlemen who run afoul of a crooked rancher and his patsy sheriff. Annette Benning provides the love interest for Costner. There is the expected extended gunfight at the end. The shots in DTS are startling. The cinematography is simpply gorgeous. Filmed in Canada with Costner directing. I liked it.

Follow Ups:
I loved this film. Duvall has the perfect tone. Costner is very good. The relationships seem realistic. And this is the first western I can recall seeing in which the townsfolk leave town in droves for fear of being struck by a stray bullet rather than line up to watch.

I was reluctant to see this one but was pleasantly surprised by a restrained performance by Kostner. Glad he didn't ham it up.
I wasn't expecting much from this one, but imo it really delivered!
With this performance, and his turn as Gus in Lonesome Dove, Robert "Bluebonnet" Duval gets my vote as the best screen cowboy ever (sorry, John Wayne fans!).
My only quibble...I hate it when a dog gets it.
