Wow! Haven't seen this movie since I was a kid. Hard to believe I loved it as a young teen. Intense, passionate, powerful, disturbing (one very particular seen) movie. Hard to believe John Wayne beat out Anthony Quinn for the Oscar. Lila Kedrova, Alan Bates, Irene Papas were perfection. Papas doesn't have a word of dialog in the movie. But her eyes! And Lila? Unbelievable. A consummate performance.....and that last seen....

Follow Ups:
that John Wayne won was for 1969's "True Grit." Quinn did not win for 1964's "Zorba the Greek." Quinn wasn't nominated in 1969 and Wayne wasn't in 1964."True Grit" is a fair movie. I cannot say that Wayne did not deserve his Oscar but he should have won for "The Searchers", a far better film with a splendidly iconic Wayne performance. The Oscar in 1969 SHOULD have gone to the unnominated Yves Montand for his earth shattering performance in Costa-Gavras's masterful "Z". Quinn should have won for "Zorba" but didn't - proof that the best aren't always recognized.
Then read the Kazantzakis novel. A great writer who also wrote the Last Temptation of Christ, among other books.
