I can't recall another film that told the simple story of common people with such love, power, compassion and sympathy. I mean this as a strong statement, for Ermanno Olmi's film is nothing short of a true masterpiece, told in very quiet voice but reaching deep, deep into your soul.It is something you shall never forget... something that will stay with you for long time. I will not start disecting it into directing, script, camerawork... the usual things, as their harmonious union in that film is something you don't see often.
I have seen three Olmi's films, and I would be hard pressed to pick the best of them. I want to keep them all, for each is a special event.
Simply breathtaking and overwhelming in its sheer poetry.
