Yes, the character of the American Shears is obviously a part of the comic relief, as he has many sarcastic & humorous comments along the way---and of course, his plight of an escapee who must turn right back around and go back to blow up the bridge is a central part of the irony.
Yes and he played his part very well.
Maybe an underated actor.
He was thought too young for his part in "Sunset Boulevard" and too old for his part in "Picnic". I thought he was fabulous in both.
