wished for a better edited film. Ganz could have been a major star in the 20s: his face is more expressive than speaking actors, today.
But, ultimately, the film fails in the "one of the greatest" category because of the lack of attractiveness of the female lead. Also, the scene in the bar with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds went on and on and on...
I don't want to say too much negative, however, and give the wrong impression. This is a magical, brilliant, and uplifting film which affirms the human condition. Shouldn't all art if it aspires to greatness?

Follow Ups:
I utterly despise this film, as I do all of Wenders's work. It's a maudlin, hyper-emotionalist sap-fest of Spielbergian magnitude. Ineffectual angels who can do nothing but lay their oh-so-caring heads on the shoulders of the oh-so-oblivious, and life is all so sad, but also all so beautiful, and aren't we all so deep for recognizing this. Pathetic. And god almighty how I hate The Birthday Party and it's offshoot bands featured here.

...in fact, I must be only one of six people on the planet to dislike ET and LOATHE Jaws. However, while I'll allow that Wenders is a very uneven filmmaker, I do like Wings Of Desire. Very much.

I agree with all of that and, while I will admit it was not perfect, I don't really agree with your earlier criticisms.I saw this twice when it came out in the theatres and a number of times since then on VHS and DVD. The black and white cinematography showing the angels eye view of the world is superb on the big screen. I liked it so much I could never see the Nicolas Cage remake.

I think films, when they are first released, have much more power to 'surprise' us.
Afterwards, there's the ballast of all criticism hanging on them.
I haven't seen Wings of Desire since it came out.
I loved it then.

amazing us?
Run Lola Run was just as interesting to me when I recently re-saw it because the love story was just as poignant. Heck, I was still awed by the directorial style and cinematography/fx.
