Fonda showed, in a tightly controlled, almost icy, performance that he was a master of nuance. With the most subtle of eye movement or expression, he conveyed anger, rage, shock, surprise, crushing depression, and bewhilderment.
The film almost is documentary-like, but at its core it beats with a fierce heart.
Vera Miles gives a performance few could AND she is ravishingly beautiful. 'tis a pity she didn't accept Hitch's offer to star in Vertigo. As good as Kim was, she ain't no Vera.
This film was hard to watch but it is worth the effort. Like a depth charge, it takes time to unsettle you.
