I went to a double feature last night (Friday night!) of A Streetcar named desire and On the waterfront. Pristine prints in a SOTA movie theater. In the heart of Hollywood (Egyptian theater/American Cinemateque) I got there an hour early in anticipation of a sold out show and long lines. What a joke. About fifty people showed up. IMO that is disgusting. How could this bill on the big screen not be sold out?

Follow Ups:
had. Sad but true: moviehouses that specialize in "classical" fare have pretty much all gone out of business.
Near where I live, Ft. Myers to be exact, an art house cinema was financed by a retired big wig in the movie business who got a great break on pricing...he still couldn't make a go of it, in spite of offering very cheap and excellent snacks, package deals, free transportation for the elderly, etc.
I repeat myself: sitting at home in front of even a ten foot screen ain't the same, especially when it's a Titan like Brando: he's meant to be experienced sixty-feet tall!

...the movie industry is in a tizzie because attendence figures for movies this year have dropped off precipitously. I'd say the trend is a result of a combination of poor products (movies) and the shift toward DVD and home theater. Most would probably chose to see the films you mentioned at home.

Clearly not the issue here.

Sad.....
Have you seen the classical music sales figures lately?Read and weep.
But then, I don't think I would go to that show if I lived nearby either.
