In the course of a year an unraveling Sean Penn loses his wife and family, loses his job, steals form his brother's business, and causes his partner to end up in jail. He comes to blame everything on Richard Nixon so in early 1974 he boards a plane in Baltimore and attempts to hijack it to crash it into the White House. This is a wonderful Penn performance and a credible study of a man slowly going insane. Naomi Watts plays his wife and Don Cheadke plays his partner who also counsels him on his behavior. Recommended.

Follow Ups:
meant to be a portrayal of a guy unravelling but it sheds no new light on these types of personalities, is predictable, and is utterly negative.
"Taxi Driver" covered the same ground; in this movie, neither the writing nor Penn's acting (I suppose he did what he could with such a bland characterization) rise very high.
In the end, who cares what happens to such a jerk?
Seems to me the director didn't know what to say so his choices ultimately said nothing. At least a documentary has the benefit of being true: I know, it's supposedly based on a true story. Well, a documentary--to be successful--would have had to show some of the personality traits that led to the unweaving.
A movie must function w/in the universe it creates: this one failed to answer any questions, leaving a vacuum to be filled by...nihilism.
