I hated the first four Batman films but I loved "Batman Begins". I thought it successfully captured the tone and flavor of both the original Bob Kane story and the later graphic novels. The action is of course over the top but the music and surround sound mix are top notch.

Miller had a flashy drawing style that was all surface with no substance, and unfortunately an entire generation of comic book artists grew up aping his art. He was utterly unable to do the most important and basic element of comics: tell a story with pictures! The truly great comic book artists such as Jack Kirby and John Buscema had such strong storytelling ability that you could pretty much follow the plots of their comics without reading anything. If you removed the dialogue from a Miller comic book on the other hand you'd be completely lost. His storytelling and page composition was so poor that he sometimes had to resort to inserting arrows to show the reader which panel to go to next. Miller also was a mediocre draftsman at best. His characters changed proportion from one panel to the next, and even in a single frame Batman might have forearms of two different sizes.Miller is the John Tesh of comic book artists. I ran into him at a movie in NYC once and told him that I thought he should stick his hands in a blender.

been as wonderful... I agree with the other poster that the role of Scarecrow/Dr. Crane appeared to be played by a 20 year old....Apparently the actor that played the part, auditioned for the role of Batman and made such an impression on the director that he offered him the villian role. Glad he went with Bale...Batman needs to be an imposing figure both as Batman and Bruce Wayne...a 5'9" actor just won't cut it.....Overall though I loved the look of this film...very dark. It was somewhat like the Tim Burton films which I really did like. The only thing that spoiled the first Batman movie for me was the lousy Prince songs! I'm looking forward to the next installment!

I did forget to mention that the film bounces between the Depression and present times, meaning that everyone would be at least 100 years old. Worse, they kept reminding you of the death of Wayne's parents "in the Depression".

I just saw this and thought it was pretty good. It was a little weird seeing Katie Holmes play a district attourney as Katie is about 25 years old. And the guy who played the doctor seemed a bit young for that role as wel. He looked like he was about 20!

DC has learned from the Spiderman franchise and got the studio to have the characters and story played straight. My wife and I just saw it this afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed it. I would have liked the hand-to-hand fight scenes to be shot a little farther back and less chopped up visually. I'm a fan of realistic fight scenes, and this film was just ripe for them. Maybe the next "Batman" film will delve a little deeper into the choreography of physical violence, like happened with the second "Bourne" movie.
I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel. This film is going to invoke a lot of comparisons to the TV series and the previous attempts at movies, then everyone will forget about everything that went before. We finally have a good benchmark for the Caped Crusader on film.
Cheers,Graham
