Well, I finally got around to picking up a copy of The Ring Virus.
Anyone else see all 3 versions of this film (American, Japanese and Korean)? What did you think of them?Didn't care much for the Hollywood version as much... seemed to rely more on special effects than psychological eerieness. Though, I really liked the way they had the girl come out of the tv at the end (makeup and effects fit classic Japanese ghost stories... reminded me of end of the film Shikoku in a way).
The Japanese version was my favorite... just the right combination of atmosphere and leaving stuff up to your own imagination, so that your subconscious bugs you.
The Korean version was decent too and probably explained the story best, but maybe got too detailed (especially with the video tape imagery) and spoiled a bit of the "spooky" factor.
Be interesting to see a cross-breed version made by the Japanese director, the Korean writer and Hollywood money & effects.

Follow Ups:
but it may have to do with the fact it was the first one I watched. The Japanese one I watched second, and I thought the Korean one was way better written, but the Japanese one should get the credit for being THE original. The American one did the usual Hollywood thing but lost a lot of the intimate, campy horror of the other two. But I do love Naomi anyways..

as a general rule. Perhaps because the surprise or shock is gone after watching it, or just that the first has the biggest impact on us.

I haven't seen Ring virus, since most people I've talked to said it was rather slow, and didn't like it as much as the Japanese or US versions. I thought the US version was scarier, but had bigger plot holes, whereas the Japanese version had atmosphere and explained the story better. Overall, I prefered the US version, which is unusual for me, but it may be because that's the version I saw first. There have been some good horror/pschological dramas coming out of Korea. Most notably, is "A Tale of Two Sisters", which I recomend if you haven't seen it yet, and the "Whispering Corridors" trilogy. I have "phone" on order, which may be interesting.

looks liek a kids horror movie. Lots of overacting. And the "waking up in the bathtub with your liver removed" plot line.

koma is an HK movie. As a general rule, I'm not fond of their horror.
