Those familiar with the life and death of scandalous Italian director know the history behind his sorry last masterpiece Salo... better not be mentioned before dinner.Probably the strongest film that didn't have to be made, and if you had to purge your memory of one, that would be it.
And yet, Pasolini made many many other films, which do deserve attention, in my view. I enjoyed his classical stories: Il Decameron (perhaps my favorite, due to my love for the original Boccaccio work), I Racconti di Canterbury, Il Fiore delle mille e una notte, Edipo re...
So - why this oblivion? You can happily live through years of movie discussions without encountering his name.
Doesn't sound fair to me.

Follow Ups:
shock value which has become dated, would have been considered minor talents.

Have you seen "The Gospel...", "Mamma Roma", "Accattone", "Medea"...?He may be not your cup of tea but great he was indeed!

boring. Accatonne? I was asleep in 15 minutes.
A minor talent, and by using "talent" I'm being generous.

As far as I can tell, the world public has been unaware or unconcerned about his fight with the Italian one.

Maybe that´s one of the main reasons, not so different from a Freudian mechanism of deffense...Regards
There is almost always " une descente aux enfers " for an artist after his death. I would also say that a part of his films are just vulgar as you can see his love to this male prostitutes on some of them.

His talent went far beyond the use of mere shock value, and is films are holding up very well.

Then you're not discussing films with the right people. Knowledgable cinephiles are certainly familiar with Pasolini's work. Avoid philistines, you might learn something. Seems you have a lot of catching up to do based on viewing your daily displays of ignorance.

Got you Victor....
The Evangile selon St. Mattieu are mine.
I just read an article about his killer( s )... Still not certain who did it. It loos as it would have been the far right, as we know, he was a Marxist.

I recently saw Pasolini's "Gospel According to St. Matthew." Imagine this film being made by an atheist who (wrongly) believed that the gospels would degenerate into incomprehensibility over time. Nevertheless it was a compelling, beautifully photographed film with many unforgettable scenes. Cast exclusively by local residents as well, which created a realistic ambience. Defintely a filmmaker who defies categorization.I also saw Salo once (which was enough). Very difficult to sit through but also a rather prescient and accurate synopsis of humanity's state of nature when God is filtered out of the equation entirely. We can see our own culture's obsession with sex and gratification increasing exponentially with the expungement of "morality."

war, invasion of foreign lands, spreading the Gospel of Christ and Democracy/Free Markets?
There was plenty of sex and gratification in the old days or have you forgotten several films mentioned here, i.e. Decameron, Canterbury Tales.
I seem to recall some licentious, wide-spread (sorry...) actions by Catholic priests, too.

Have you seen the film, Tinear?
