In Reply to: Victor, have you seen Closer with Natalie Portman? posted by jackrandom on August 9, 2005 at 16:26:01:
No, not yet. I mostly try to get such movies when they hit the cable channels. I don't have such a strong love for Natalie per se, but certainly consider her much above the average Hollywood stiff, and to me her best role still remains Matilda... but I have seen people praise her performance in the recent movies, so I will be keeping my eyes open.![]()

Follow Ups:
Well, both movies have gotten some very good reviews (for what that's worth -- very little I know). And I think Natalie was unformly good in them. Closer may give a glimpse of what she may mature into as an actor.Closer is based on a play and the dialogue has that staged quality to it (ie people don't really talk like that in real life.) Clearly Pdl did not like it but I found it worth watching.
Garden State I like but I believe it is not your thing, given the movies you've praised and panned here. Unfortunately too, the first half is the more boring half, so even if you gave it a try you might give up on it.
I'd be interested in your impressions, as your opinions generally are well informed, even if my tastes run more mainstream US than yours.

If you thought Sideways was bad, wait until you see those two flicks. Garden State was pure pseudo-indie crapola and Closer a dialog driven "relationship" movie in which none of the actors are convincing.

re-make herself by going VERY against type as a hooker/slut.
She looked as old as Jodie Foster did in "Taxi Driver" and as poorly cast. I don't know who her acting coach is but she'd better add a voice coach as well: she can't speak more than five-word sentences before her voice peters out.
Tom Cruise is a boy tring to act like a man. Now, we have the female version.
