The 1961 film was restored and re-released in 1991. For its DVD release, Criterion further tweked the color and density and claims that the DVD version is the closest top the origianl film yet. Original director Anthony Mann was fired by producer-star Kirk Douglas and Stanley Kubrick took over after a weekend's notice. I don't know who had the clever idea of casting American actor as the gladiator slaves and Brits as the Romans but it works well on a psychological level. Saul Bass' credit sequence is one of the most stunning in filmdom. The story, direction, acting, cinematography, and music are top drawer and the film was rightly hailed as "the thinking man's epic". This one is a long time favorite here at the ricopad. One of Olivier's best movie roles.

Follow Ups:
A great deal of his money went into it. It was, in large part, his idea. Mann crossed him. Mann was gone.I do have some time for Kirk. Unlike most of the Primo Machos in Hollywood he could actually hold his own in a fight. Especially in a boxing ring. One could actually believe Douglas had the courage to try to be a hero when he played one.
I do remember when the movie first came out queues around the block to get into it.
Kubrick finally warmed to the film and agreed to the first restoration on LaserDisc for Criterion. But "epics" were alien to Kubrick.
BTW. No one knows what actually happened to Spartacus. But the liklihood was that he was simply hacked to pieces in the final battle against Crassus.
As for Crassus . . . he got his arse killed against the Asyrians . . . all of his wealth did him no good whatsoever.
Jean Simmons. Rahrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Nice synopsis & I like the film too Rico - but Tony Curtis lapsing into "New York - ese" "...Hey Spah-Duh-Kiss ! ..." is always good for a snicker.
his lines in Spartacus are sheer bliss!

I remember seeing this one, over-dubbed in French somewhere.
I think it blew some of my neurons...imagine, Kirk Douglas, as Spartacus, talking french?
