I own the DVD and have been watching it a lot on Cinemax lately, and I must say, I love this movie! Definitely one of my favorites. The acting is top-notch--I think it's one of Pacino's better performances, in a career full of them--and it captures the flavor of '70s Queens really well. The music is excellent as well. Sean Penn is terrific as Kleinfeld, Carlito's crooked attorney. That perm is a gas! Definitely worth catching if you like gangster flicks and haven't seen it yet. Very sad ending, though.

No intention here to take a pot shot at a movie you like but this is an AL THING. I agree that Sean Penn was wonderful. My jaw drops everytime I see him in that film . What bugs me about Carlito's is -I get the feeling Al Pacino is enjoying playing a "homey" street-wise bad-ass TOUGH GUY ... WAY more then I enjoy watching him . He seemed to gravitate torwards this kind of persona the last 20 years or so. What happened to soft-spoken Michael Corleone ? Serpico ? Francis in Scarecrow ? Arthur Kirkland in And Justice for All ? Bobby Deerfield ?
It seems that after Scarface , Al Pacino COMPLETELY changed his acting persona. Although he's logged in some great post Scarface roles , I can't help but notice the strange metamorphis of Al.
Jim:I agree that, after Scarface, Al did seem to fixate on these street-tough roles. Then again, he's always played streetwise characters. Michael Corleone, arguably, was the first, followed by Serpico. Personally, I've always enjoyed him in these roles. He does nearly everything well, but in these roles, he's especially believable, IMO. That's probably why I like "Carlito's Way" so much. Sean Penn is another big reason why. He's another guy who seemingly can't do much wrong in his films. Thanks for your response. It was very enlightening.

Yes, I like this one. Sean Penn gives a real solid performance, and as you mentioned the afro is great! Two issues I have with CW are:1. Its a little too long - probably could have been edited.
2. The Pacino and his girlfriend story line is a bit weak. Its fairly predictable and Penelope is not very convincing actress.Overall, I did enjoy the movie.
