Billy Wilder directed this hard hitting tale of a chronic alcoholic writer over a four day binge. Ray Milland is splendid in the leading role and he gets unflagging support from girlfriend Jane Wyman. A harrowing portrait of alcoholism at its worst. The ending is purposely ambiguous. Highly recomended.

Follow Ups:
Many unintentionally hilarious moments... The bat attacking the mouse in the wall. The scene at the opera house (was it La Traviata playing?) where they're having the toast on stage and the actors turn into bottles of liquor. A fantastic film, and one that bears repeat viewing. Right on the money, Rico.

I get hot and tired just watching the scene where Milland is trying to pawn his type writer.
