  Hickock was a bit of a has been and boozer by this point anyway so shooting him in the back of the head was probably easy. As the various movies point out, Hickock never sat without placing his back against the wall . . . but this time he did. And this time McCall was in the bar and came up behind Hickock (holding aces and 8s as almost everyone knows) and shot him in the back of the head. Whatever McCall's gripe was it was avenged with interest.

  Jack McCall accused Bill Hickok of tainting his mother's name, and making promises to her he did not keep and he married another. The motive for the killing is still debated, but I am from South Dakota and it's the legend around here that I grew up with.
