I just finished reading Kazakevich's book "Star"---and did a search to see if it was ever made into a movie. Apparently there are two versions of "Zvezda"----one made in 1949 by A. Ivanov and a more recent one in 2002 directed by Nikolai Lebedev.Apparently the 2002 version is the only one available outside of Russia.
Have you seen either? Any opinions? I was very impressed by the book---even though the English translation was somewhat lacking...
Follow Ups:
A superb war film, a real must see.

Yes, I have seen both, the original one too long ago to remember well, the new version a couple of years back. What it has is the typical Russian war movie flavor... which is to say it is quite realistic overall, albeit with some extra emphasis on heroism, of course... how could it be a war movie without. Tons of humanism.
The original has some of the most famous Russian actors, the new one is mostly populated by younger ones, but one thing for sure - films like this will definitely broaden your horizon, so I wish more people did what you are doing... and not because this is a Russian movie.
Definitely post your impressions of it. Is there a place you can get it? I don't see it in the Amazon link.

I saw it in the used section of Amazon, along with a few copies on eBay. If I get hold of a copy, I'll be sure to post about it...The book read like a "movie"---if you know what I mean---so I figured it was probably made into a film at some point, hence the search...
