I watched a Swedish film called "Kitchen Stories" which I thought was a little weird (and I like weird) and I never really got into it even though it was somewhat funny. It was described as hilarious, so i figured it could have been fater than it actually was. Swedish winters are faster.
Next was a German film called "Shultze Gets the Blues", which I found to be funnier and more endearing. Possibly because it had to do with music and possibly because its main character was so easy to like. Going against the mainstream and dropping out of society to follow his dreams, he was a cool dude.
Anyone else find these to be worthy of two hours?!

I laughed and I cried - one of my favorites from last year.

I love the music, particularly the piano piece in the beginning. It _is_ laugh-out-loud funny once you get into it's particular, stoic groove.

Ok, I gotta admit, THAT is funny! Not that I didn't "get" the film, it's just that it really had to drag out the laughs (or laugh) with a rope. I guess I just don't see "Post-War Guilt" as outrageously humorous?! This is a tough crowd - remind me not to show you guys my next script!

humor founded on extreme vulgarity, feces-slinging (pies aren't enough anymore), and sophomoric insults, this film will mystify them.
The fact that the humor is shown actually to mask a very serious underlying story (the post-WWII emotional landscape with its attendant guilt) only adds to the brilliance.

...but then again, there could have been some war-related remarks which simply eluded me. If there was more meaning to the "Don't tell about the Finns" remark, or the roomful of pepper, or Grant's rather cryptic remark as he walks out of the haircut scene, I didn't really catch it.

others, much to their lasting guilt. That's the underlying "frisson" between the two main characters.

I saw Schultze here locally this summer and loved it. Everyone was so kind to him. It's a shame that areas in which the film was made are now devestated.

True. There was no reason to dislike him. Had he landed in NYC instead, he would have immediately had his arse kicked and wallet lifted! Of course, in N.O., it would only have taken until Saturday night... ;-)

Jeesh, kick a city when it's down, whydoncha?

Thanks for the "special recognition". It was not meant to be a "kick" of course, but a humorous insite into the realities of major American cities and how they can welcome naivete. I think everyone will miss N.O. as it may be years before it returns to anything near what it was. Hopefully we will be surprised with a fast and spirited recovery. Improvements to infrastructure can certainly be made as evidenced by all of the recent video footage.
