Billy Crudup or Claire Danes but they are equally fantastic in this clever work. The plot is intricate as a Shakespearean comedy, but more easily followed, and the performances of the supporting cast, including James Fox and Rupert Everett are up to the task, as well.
I won't bother to describe much of this film because from the writing to the costumes, to the editing... it's all excellence.
The film is great fun but also leaves the viewer with much to think about regarding theater, gender--- well, you get the idea.
The climactic theater scene elevates the film to a level few attain--- especially these days. And, it brings off what very, very few films have managed: it convincingly shows a play.
Bravo!!!

Follow Ups:
I thought Crudup was good in Almost Famous (maybe 'cause he looked like Dicky Betts?) But them I saw him in 2 other movies and he was awful. Stage Beauty is pretty good though, eh? I'll look into it - thanks for the report!

...wherein she starred as a highschool student? 'My So-called Life'? My wife and I loved it, but, of course, being high quality and appealing to adults and not dumshit dideeboppers, it didn't last long--the good ones don't.
