films: several directors actually pre-dated the Godards and the Bunuels in making strong political statements. Many of the listed films are considered classics, but for some reason they haven't become very well known here (in Europe, they are moreso).
Central Station, City of God, Dona Flor and her Two Husbands... these films were possible because of the pioneering works done under the threat of death from the violent military dictatorship in Brasil at the time.
Try some and find out a bit more about a very different culture--- it ain't all samba and soccer.

Follow Ups:
..also caught Broken Flowers yesterday & liked it very much - not as epic as Dead Man but with all the tight & simple subtleness that I like in Jarmusch' films + some funny moments (carrots & him waking up with one of the ex's plastered all over him).
A sense of loss & emptiness redeemed by his Murray's short advice to his 'son', then blown again by his wanting to 'own' him.
I think these type of films look simple but must be quite hard to get right. Jarmusch has it down to a pat.
Murray has to patent his modern day Buster Keaton before every older actor gets a hold of it.
