I am not sure if this German movie has been released in the US, and even though i watched it last night i don't really know what the title is.If you like to watch people kill their own children and blow their own brains out, then this is the film for you. I can't imagine what preverse mind wanted to make this film? A German "artist" trying to atone for the attrocities of the Third Reich? Were we meant to feel sorry for the SS officers who committed suicide, but not Goebbels? I don't get it. What about giving the dog a cyanide capsule? That was subtle.
On the other hand, i would like to see a movie about the treatment of German civilian refugees by the allied governments in the year sfter the war. It is a little known story that Germans are afraid to talk about, lest it be considered an apology for the war and racial policy of the Third Reich.
Follow Ups:
The power of this movie was in seeing how intelligent, civilized people can support barbarism, and how this can seem good, even correct, from a certain point of view. You find yourself sympathizing with the characters in the bunker, when it hits you: "What am I thinking? How can I be rooting for the Nazis?"Meanwhile in the USA, we've got right-wingers who tell us we need to support our troops and president, and to question or criticize is made to seem unpatriotic. So the movie has a certain resonance here, at least as far as I'm concerned.

...........you didn't pay very close attention. Listen to his and the director's interview on NPR at the link below.

The movie was in german with danish subtitles, which was fine, but when foreign movies are released in Denmark they have to change the translation of the foreign (US, german, etc) title into danish for some legal reason, so the original name of the film is lost, often by a lot. I never remember the danish title of a foreign film. It has no reference. Thanks for the link to the US station. A thoughtful interview, but it didn't change my personal impression.
If you want to see a really bad movie by a danish director in english, see Wendy. On the other hand, I loved Dogville, and thought the ending was just as it should be. So, you figure it out.

Now there is a movie with a message. All humans are shit to the very marrow of their bones. No thanks, real humans are far more interesting, complex and worth while. So are good movies with good characters.

........what a fantastic film. In fact I'm a great fan of Lars von Trier. I still don't understand the common opinion by many US critics that he hates America. I've always thought that he admires this country.

That was a weird one indeed and I did think the ending was perfect, although expected.
