Because of some posts here about San Francisco traffic, I was inspired to watch this Hitchcock masterpiece again last night. It is a spellbinding film, made more so by Bernard Herrman's magnificent score. The only thing that always bothers me, however, is the shots of Stewart and Novack driving to the mission where the projection behind the rear car window shows that they are driving on the wrong side of the road. It may be that the director is purposefully trying to disorient us but I for one find it distracting.BTW, the documentary "Obsessed with Vertigo" is an excellent look at the making of the film and its mid-seventies resoration. Since the film was re-released in 6 track DTS I wonder why the DVD doesn't give us that option (it is not anamorphic, either).

Follow Ups:
Very revealing of Hitchcock's "blonde misogyny". Great movie, but I saw it as a child when it first came out and didn't understand it. It wasn't until I was adult that I caught on to the themes of obsession and yearning.
Hitchcock was a Brit, and probably put Scotty on the "correct" side of the road as an item of humor.

Well actually it was the absolute reverse! Hich loved blondes....

More like sadistic, frustrated obsession. He tortured his actresses. He knew they would never willinglly reciprocate his interest if it weren't for money and power, and so he tormented them.

Hum...Actually he had a long and lasting relation with Grace and get more than along with Carole.
A little too easy....

Look at the theme of Vertigo. The deceiving woman entrancing the vulnerable man into obsession, depression and near psychosis. Scotty is the patsy all the way around and the blond (two blondes) wind up squashed like bugs. I would call this self revealing on Hitchcock's part. The only one who seems to come out OK is the hearless, cad friend who started the whole thing in the first place to murder his wife.

Well I would not take one film and extrapolate on the inner life of Hitch...

dont't get me started.

The current DVD includes an alternate ending made for the European market. It comes after Madeline falls and shows Midge listening to a radio newscast about Darren being apprehended in Switzerland and extradited to the U.S. Then Stewart enters and she mixes drinks, just like in old times.

One of the most erotic and obsessive film ever. and with such a complexity that it is always a challence to look at it.

I never noticed that rear-projection gaffe, but I will look for it next time. Bernie's score is truly a masterpiece, and turns this film into one long bizarre dream.FYI, there's a big box of Hitchcock being released next month. Details are unclear, but people are hoping Vertigo and Psycho will have new anamorphic transfers (some people are also hoping Vertigo will include the original mono soundtrack, but I like the 5.1).
Keep your eyes peeled for reviews of the quality.
Thanks for the tip. Maybe they'll give us DTS as well as anamorphic.BTW, those wrong side of the road shots appear more than once.

Continuity: As Scotty and Judy (Madeleine) are driving on a two lane road to Mission San Juan Bautista, it is obvious Scotty is driving on the "wrong" side of the road. Reportedly, when this was pointed out to Hitchcock, he replied, "You drive your way; I'll drive mine.

not too long ago and we both enjoyed it. I really want one of those big Jaguars!
