It's too bad that this film was released about the same time that "Dr. Strangelove" was because I think the latter distracted from the brilliance of "fail Safe". It is incredibly taut and lade with all the usual "is a nuclear device hust another weapon?" discussions. Henry Fonda is remarkable convincing as the president and all the other characters are well cosen and act convincingly. This is an all time classic about the unthinkable.

Follow Ups:
This film and many others were discussed. Such great flicks as "Nework", "Long Day's Journey in Night", "Murder on the Orient Express", "Serpico", "The Verdict", "Twelve Angry Men", "Equus", "The Pawnbrocker", "Stagestruck"...

Hi,
Fail Safe was gripping, but then so was Strangelove. Time is the real test, and Strangelove has woven itself into our culture. Fail Safe is a great film, but didn't resonate so deeply.

in addition to Fail Safe and Dr. Strangelove. Their predecessor but similar in feel to Fail Safe.A subdued, intelligent take on the aftermath of nuclear apocalypse, taken to its logical conclusion. The song Waltzing Matilda was never the same to me after having seen OTB. Gregory Peck, Fred Asatire, Ava GArdner, Anthony Perkins, all were superb, as was Stanley Kramer's direction.

One of my all time favorites. I vaguely remember George Clooney doing a remake for television that wasn't half bad either. Also about the same time period was "Seven Days in May" that still brings chills when I watch it. Still very timely and something I half expected during the Clinton years and his war with the military.

I am looking for a script from "Fail Safe".
My video production students would like to try to do a LIVE shoot simular to Cloony's.
Any help greatly appreciated.

The Clooney version was made my Warner Bros TV, and was actually a filmed-live event (Directed by Stephen Frears in 2000). Faithful to the original, and pretty good, as a result. Can't beat the Lumet piloted original. Remember Larry Hagman as the president's interpreter? Dom Deluise has a small character part in the war room. Nicely done.

The clooney one was done live and it indeed was very good. That riot scene at the begining of "Seven Days in May" is real. While the film makers were setting up for their staged riot a real one occurred and so a lot of the footage is of an actual riot.
