Watched this DVD a couple nights ago. Hadn't seen it since I saw it in the theater, and it was pretty much as I remembered. Solid performances by Bill Macy and Maria Bello and a great performance by William Baldwin. (Interesting how Baldwin puts in so many worthy performances as a supporting actor, yet none of his brothers can act worth a sh@t.) The Cooler moves right along until the last 1/3, where it starts to drag. I don't know if its gets predictable, or just boring, but I (again) found myself losing interest during the last 1/2 hour or so. This is exactly what I recall from seeing it in the theater - and perhaps the lag at the film's end is one of the reasons The Cooler did not fare so well at the box office? I don't think my diminished interest near the end had much to do with the somber and somewhat depressing of the movie, but more with the arc of the story.
Follow Ups:
I am surprised you were able to see this little gem in a theater. Certainly not a multiplex, I would think it would be lost amongst the din. The film seems as though it was written for Macy, so perfect is the role for his personality. The surprise, for me, was Bello. Unlike most of what I have seen her in. The film held me through to the end, so I guess that is the only place I would disagree.

was great and was added dramatic tension that reinforced the tension between Macy and Baldwin. Baldwin was magnifico. He played the old school type manager as good as DeNiro could have. Being old school myself, I'm always sympathetic to those type characters, even when they're threatening to break the protagonist's legs. Maria Bello, shes just plain hot. loved this flick. The wife runs from the toom when it comes on which is a damn good sign its good.
