I won't bother to mention all the particulars but you will like life is good after viewing this film about a family's everyday life in post-WW2 Japan.
Ozu's films make me wish I could just jump into my tv and live amongst the characters.

Follow Ups:
and 15 years later I'm still here ( ! )While the quiet pace of Ozu's immediate Post-war world is harder to find, and I wasn't here in 1950 to compare then-with-now, there's still a level of charm that isn't hard to find
If I can paraphrase a Woody Allen line; "Just because you were born in the USA doesn't mean you grew up in a Norman Rockwell painting"
And the same with Ozu; the kids in his films don't pull each others hair at the dinner table and have fistfights over who's turn it is to do the dishes (not on camera, anyway!)Not to belittle Ozu's films in the least, they remain timeless and wonderful

Konazawa (sp ?) and we'll probably visit there since it now sports a spectacularly designed museum.

about 6-7 miles from Shinjuku
It's a very popular place for shopping and lots of parks too
Your wife would likely have lived in Kanazawa which is a bit more countryside; just had a friend move there to escape the Tokyo ratrace, he says you can drop one on the "0's" off the cost of living, and I can believe that
There are indeed some spectacular museums, the Honda collection at Motegi has to be seen to be believed, the Osamu Tezuka Manga (cartoon) museum in Osaka, dedicated to the father of Japanese manga is quite something too
You'd enjoy your visit, Japan's very different!Grins
4-yr. old matures a bit more. That long flight currently would be hell.
Yeah, she lived in KAnazawa and says it's a very old city, very historical. You should check out the new museum there: it prominently was featured in several architectural zines.
Oh, she says Kanazawa was MUCH cheaper than Tokyo when she lived there, too...

of the bread loaf over the disappointment it wasn't train track?
Sure, it's a bit idealized but we can sense there are more serious problems, too.
For me, one of the most enjoyable parts was the teasing between the married and the single women: I laughed so hard I almost fell off the sofa.

Just keep posting from BFI/Sight and Sound top 100! But cripes, steal a little of the essays too! How about Paul Schrader (Transcendental Style,) Don Richie, Ray Carney or Bordwell books on Ozu?

People come here and talk about their experiences, likes and dislikes. So far all you have done was a few pre-adolescent snide remarks aimed at the other people's opinions... nothing about films, about what YOU like or don't.

films and silent, is excellent, too.
The problem with watching all these great films is that one cannot stand watching too much stuff that's mediocre.
