Hey VicHave you seen this movie? It's a joint New Zealand/UK production. It has some plot and style similarities to Lantana. It's a tad bleak and sparse (goes for 2 hours), but I found the quality of the direction and acting, with the depth of the characters, to be enthralling. It's not often that we get to witness this sort of subtlety.
It's certainly not a perfect movie, but of all the movies I watched over the Christmas period (I hired a whole heap of them) it was certainly the best. Given that this is writer-director Brad McGann's debut effort, it's a stunning achievement.
Anyway, if you do see it I'd be interested to know what you think of it. If you decide to do some research before watching it, make sure you don't find out the whole plot, as doing so would spoil it.
Follow Ups:
No, I haven't, and unfortunately it is not yet available on Netflix, but I will be watching for it. I was not too taken with Lantana - while trying to be good it did not raise to a very high level overall. But habitually, I try to watch every film from that part of the world (sorry... I know I am not supposed to, but I do lump it together with Australian films... :-) ), even though their availability here is quite limited. Some time ago I asked for recommendations, received quite a few (were you among those recommending?) but could not find some fine ones, unfortunately.I will probably send Netflix a request for more Australian and NZ movies. Maybe they will even listen?
