One of the film's strenghths is its inherent dichotomy of gay and straight concerns brought into one. The double-life attribute of the lead characters is obvious. However, the (in quotes if you like)healthy heterosexual relationships around them come into focus, revealing their own divisions.This subtlety is seen with Jake Gyllenhaal's character sitting outside a restaurant with another gentleman. Both are waiting for their wives to come out of the powder room for the ride home. The guy opposite Jake Gyllenhaal suggests that they should go fishing/hunting some time, that it would be good to get away etc.
Now, for a second, the camera catches both of them from the side looking into the distance with the sound of their wives' loud voices approaching in the background. Both men have looks of longing, same lonely feelings,same want of something else, yet, at the same time, their needs are worlds apart. Brilliant, and like I said, a mere second.
With all of its sweeping vistas, the film's score is surprisingly restrained. A good thing I think as Hollywood usually uses this feature to spoon-feed emotional intent.
Though I like Jake Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger is the real surprise here. Going into the first few minutes, I thought his soft-spokeness would amount to a flat character. His character became, I think, the most complex.
An excellent film. Highly recommended.

First, Jack was clearly cruising the guy. Then remember later when Jack's parents revealed that he had said he intended to bring a buddy up to clean up the ranch? Well...Plus the original story IIRC is somewhat more specific.

*Jack was clearly cruising the guy*I thought this was left ambiguous. No dialog between the two indicated Jack was cruising the guy. I remember the conversation being mundane, where Jack was even complaining about why wives always take a powder when they arrive and when they leave a place. I haven't read the story but the screenplay didn't hint at any physical feelings Jack had for this guy.

I thought the parents were recalling Jack's ruminations about Ennis and the plans he had with Ennis in mind. I felt the parents telling this to Ennis was a good way to get a bittersweet moment.
Maybe not.
