Yes, it has some beautiful and haunting minutes but they're just that... a couple of minutes in an hour and a half of pretentious art-house wheezing.
And yes, I understand the different ages of sexuality were being portrayed by the main characters.
The problem is who could care a hoot for any of them? If I primarily I want dry philosophy or social criticism I'll pick up a book. Bergman, sometimes, strikes me as a failed academic or essayist.

...and I think The Silence is a masterpiece, it is neither surprising nor disappointing to me that it isn't to everyone's taste. On the other hand, among others, Summer with Monica, Wild Strawberries, Sawdust and Tinsel (Naked Night), Fanny & Alexander, and for me most especially Persona, are films that I think operate at such a high level that it would surprise me if anyone dubbed them pretentious. Not that it hasn't happened...

perform like cardboard characters and mouth pretentious and overwrought cliches can be irritating.
I tried very hard to like F & A and found it... boring. I'll give it another shot, along with several others you mention. I've seen four or five of his other films, among which I liked Virgin Spring.

I wouldn't try too hard if I were you. If it's not your thing it's no biggie.OTOH if you think Fanny and Alexander is boring then you require something of/from films that is very different than what I look for. To the extent that there may be no overlap in our sensibilities. If you can't get into this one then most of the others will do nothing for you, I fear. You might try Summer with Monica or Sawdust and Tinsel which are early films.

I don't know if you're aware of it but Bergman has devoted much more of his effort over the years to his work as a stage director than to films. He's long been considered either one of or THE most important Swedish stage director of the modern period. Of course not everyone feels that way but it appears to be a clear consensus. Hard to deny he's been a major artist.
