They got unpleasant. Speaking of which, I saw a medeival torture dungeon once. Compared to hollywood movies it was disappointing. For example, the iron maiden only had 2 or 3 spikes insteas of the dozens you'd see in a film. But if they closed the door on you it would get the job done.

Before the Exorcist, excorism had pretty much been thrown into the ashbin of history, where it belonged.
