I am considering starting a subscription to Netflix but am concerned about selection, especially of foreign films and also the time it takes to get movies.Do any of you fine inmates rent foreign films from Netflix and if so how is their selection on a regular basis?
I live in Michigan, does anyone know where Netflix is located? If it was in Chicago, for example, I think I could get DVDs in a few days but LA would take about a week I imagine.
Suggestions to altenatives would be appreciated too.
thanks
Follow Ups:
We've found playback problems on Netflix disks to be much more common than on local rentals. Check all disks for crud before loading them. We've got in the habit of cleaning all Netflix disks before viewing, but occasionally get one with scratches that make it necessary to completely skip over one or more chapters of the movie.

They have a distribution center in Lansing. You'll get your DVDs the next day after shipment.

Life would stress-free if everything were as reliable as my Weber grill and Netflix subscription.
service centers and you can bet these corporate wizards wouldn't have the supply that far from a major metro area.
They've got, I think, 50 k films to choose from: they put any store to shame. Turnaround is lightning fast, usually three days for me (I've got the 2 film plan).
I'd give 'em six stars out of a possible five...

I used to live in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Netflix has a branch in Lansing and I got 90% of my movies from that location with excellent turn around time. Mail the movie back on Monday morning and have another movie on Wednesday.I have also used Blockbuster on line and had numerous problems like getting the wrong DVD in a correctly labeled envelope eight times in a row. However, they did send me a coupon for a free in store rental each time I complained about the situation. My opinion is that most of their employees are morons.

thank you all very much, I will start a trial period with them. I see they have Joint Security Area which I read about here on AA and is the reason I am looking farther than my, otherwise very impressively stocked, (3 story tall!), Video store 7 minutes away.mr grits what do you mean by:
About 4 months ago, return envelopes started having my hometown's address on them (not every one). So, they are scanning returns from major rental cities apparently. When they slow you down, return evelopes start having out of the way towns on them.
Is this a method to slow down returns?
thanks again guys
which is the same distance from here as Dallas. After they settled their so-called "class action suit" (which was no penalty to them at all) they re-wrote there fine print and new members may receive rentals faster for the first few months. I used to be Johnny-on-the-spot on returns so things started slowing down right after the class action suit. I think I read elsewhere their "idea" is for a three-plan to get no more than eleven rentals a month for profitability. I used to get 15 to 17 but am now around 11 to 12. Still, it's a good deal based on selection.
I've rented many films made in languages other than English from Netflix.I was unfortunate enough to have gotten Irreversable just last night. I ejected it after about five minutes but that's another story.I like the selection so far. Seen a few Bergman films like Persona and the Seventh Seal both in Sweedish of course , the Sargossa Manuscript in Polish several French language films like; With Friends Like Harry,Amelie,Dirty Pretty Things.I've seen the Dreamers too but the selection seems extensive. Also its pretty much the only game in town for mail order DVD and as they grow i see no reason their selection will do anything other than expand also.

I watch mostly subtitles and independent film unavailable locally. They will get you more than 12 titles a month when you first start. Then, the "legitimate" slow-down will start.About 4 months ago, return envelopes started having my hometown's address on them (not every one). So, they are scanning returns from major rental cities apparently. When they slow you down, return evelopes start having out of the way towns on them. This weekend I have three returns: my hometown, Baton Rouge, and Reno! I have had Colorado and Seattle quite a few times. I don't think has jack to do with issue locations just the return scans. Anyway, it was very frustrating at first but now I double stuff my hometown envelopes when I can and soldier on. They are the best selection and 12 a month is still cheaper than local rental.
Their good films selection has grown tremendously in the recent years, and now they are simply an indispensible source to anyone who loves movies. I suggest you start with the 3-film plan. We realistically get about 12 films a month this way.

I have gotten several family members to sign up, all of whom love it. I even pay for some of them, as it is so inexpensive for what you get.

I've had Netflix for about 1 1/2 years. They have a tremendous amount of foreign films which is a welcome relief from the tripe coming out of Hollywood. They have numerous sattelite facilities all over the country. My turn around time is 4-5 days from my amiling the disc to receiving the next one in the queue. I'm very satisfied.
There have been some allegations that frequent users got slower delivery,\, but that hasn't been my experience.
