  My wife and I will probably contribute to Opie's retirement fund this weekend (we try to catch event movies of major literary works regardless of the negative press).

  I won't prejudge the film, but I have to agree that the consensus so far isn't very promising; we'll see.

  There's a lot of "history" covered in the book, which would be hard to condense into a watchable movie, IMHO. Nobody wants to sit through a 2+ hour lecture on medieval conspiracy theories, especially if there's bad acting involved. I saw a special "preview" clip the other night, and it was rather boring---it probably doesn't help that you already know what happens, too.

  As for your theory on popular books, "Midnight In The Garden Of Good & Evil" suffered the same fate. That film was a snore.
