Robert Mitchum, Gregory Peck, and Martin Balslm all have cameos in this much more graphic and violent remake of the original. Whereas the family in the original were very happy Nick Nolte and Jessica Lange Have a lot of dynamic tension throughout this one. Juliette Lewis is far more sexy than the actress in the original and has somwhat of a relationship with Di Nero. Di Nero is over the top as the crazed Max Cady. The reason for his revenge is more subtle than Mitchum's in the original as well. The fim makers wisely chose to reuse the Herrman score, slightly modified by Elmer Bernsein. Good DTS sound on the DVD.

...and that is the one I own on DVD. I empathise far more with Peck and his family and so buy in to the tension. I also think that Mitchum comes over as a very calculating pschycopath, really chilling, where Di Nero is too OTT for me.
Both worth watching.
